New Identity Verification Requirements For All Directors

There are new identity verification requirements for all directors. In this blog we explain what you need to do to get everything up to date and avoid financial penaties.
New Identity Verification Rules for Company Directors and PSCs
Under new rules introduced by the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, all company directors and individuals with significant control (PSCs) must verify their identity with Companies House. This is to help prevent the misuse of UK companies for illegal activities.
When Does It Start?
Identity verification will become a legal requirement from autumn 2025.
What You Should Do Now
We recommend verifying your identity as soon as possible, even though it’s not yet mandatory. Acting early can help you:
- Avoid delays or issues later
- Allow time for all directors to complete verification, especially if there are several officers
- Plan ahead if you’re based outside the UK and need to use an authorised agent
Already verified your identity with Companies House? You don’t need to do it again.
How to Verify Your Identity
You can choose from three methods:
- Online using GOV.UK One Login
If you have the necessary ID documents or information, this is the quickest option. - In person at selected Post Offices
Available to UK residents only. Use the Companies House service to check if you’re eligible for this method. - Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
This could be a registered accountant or solicitor who can verify your identity on your behalf. You’ll still need to provide suitable ID.
What Happens After You Verify
Identity verification is a two-step process:
Step 1: Verify your identity and receive your personal Companies House code.
This code is unique to you—not the company—and should be kept secure. You can find it in your Companies House account under “Manage account”.
Step 2: From autumn 2025, you’ll need to link your verified identity to each company role you hold.
This will involve submitting your personal code and a verification statement. More guidance on this will be shared closer to the time.
If you don’t verify your identity on time:
- You won’t be able to file confirmation statements or other company documents
- You could face financial penalties or even be barred from forming new companies
Check Your Details Now
It’s important that Companies House has accurate information for each director and PSC. Your ID must match what’s on the register—especially details like your date of birth.
- You can check and update most details online.
- For corrections to incorporation documents or PSC details, you may need to file a paper form.
Already verified? No need to repeat the process.
To stay compliant and avoid penalties, we recommend verifying your ID sooner rather than later. In doing so, you’ll also avoid administrative headaches and potential problems from non-compliance later down the line.
