How to file your tax return online with HMRC
As accountants in the West End we are often asked how to file your tax return online with HMRC by clients who want to file their own tax returns.
So how do you file a tax return online?
If this is your first time, then you will need to register with HM Revenue and Customs on their website and obtain a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). This is made up of 10 numbers
Once registered, HMRC will send you in the post an activation code which make take approximately 10 days to reach you.
To complete the registration, you will then need log in to HMRC website (also know as the Government Gateway account) with your user ID, activation code, Unique Taxpayers Reference and either your postcode or National Insurance number.
Then go to the self assessment option and proceed to complete your Tax Return online
Once completed you will then have an option to file your Tax return online with HMRC. Once filed you will receive an email acknowledgement that it has been filed.
You will then be able to view your tax computation and how much tax you owe.
It is essential that you file your tax return on time (31 January) to avoid a penalty of £100 and possible interest charges as well.
I would strongly advise you to complete you tax return well before the deadline as you will able to save for the tax and explore any tax planning opportunities to reduce the amount of tax you pay.
