It is very important that you identify and write down your vision statement.
To develop you vision statement you need to consider where you would like to be in 2 to 3 years’ time. It has to be absolutely core to your belief and you need to be passionate about it.
The reason for this absolute statement is that it will guide you thorough the ups and downs you will face as you try to develop and grow your business. It will get you through the difficult times when you cannot see the wood from the trees!
One of my client’s vision statement was to grow the turnover by 100% over the next 2 years and be able to take a 4 week holiday without worrying about whether his company would still be trading when he returned from holiday!
So, you need to write down your vision statement, which ideally should be no longer than two sentences, and make sure this is exactly where you want to get to in 2 to 3 years time
At this point it is not necessary to “drill” down to the detail as this would come later when the strategic action plan is developed.
I would also suggest you link up with one or two other business entrepreneurs who also have the strong desire to take their company to the next level i.e. set up a mentoring group. The reason why, is that I have found by adopting this approach, then the members in the group are much more likely to reach their vision as you will be held accountable to each other
You should arrange to meet on a regular basis and I would suggest at least once a month. The meeting should take place outside work to minimise any possible disruptions.
Each of the members should take an equal amount of time in explaining their business and the current difficulties they are facing. Notes should be taken and at the end of the meeting an agreed action plan should be produced.
At the beginning of every monthly meeting the last month’s action plan should be discussed and each point should be measured. This makes all the members accountable and you will be amazed at how this drives the members to complete the action points agreed before the next meeting.
In one group. a members turnover increased by 100% in a period of 7 months which is remarkable given the bench mark average in their industry was approximately 5%.
So I would strongly advise you to set up a mentoring group with other business entrepreneurs that are not your sector and be accountable to each other so that you can move towards your vision statement
